As I have listed on the Make Money list on the Get Started page, Youtube is one of the most popular and easiest-to-access way to make money online for teens. Note that I said easy-to-access is not easy 🙂 . But don’t worry, in today’s post, I’ll show you how to setup your Youtube channel for Monetization and the various aspect of making money online with Youtube.
This tutorial might be a bit long so maybe I’ll divide it into multiple parts.
Let’s get started !
1. What is Youtube ?
You can skip through this since pretty much anyone that has ever used the Internet knows what Youtube is but anyway, read on if you want to know more about its make-money-online aspect.
On its own About page:
Launched in May 2005, YouTube allows billions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos. YouTube provides a forum for people to connect, inform, and inspire others across the globe and acts as a distribution platform for original content creators and advertisers large and small.
YouTube is a Google company.
To sum it up, Youtube is a website that let you watch, upload and comment on videos as well as make money from the videos you uploaded, which is what matter more to us 😆
2. How does YouTube help teens make money online ?
YouTube generates tons of traffic everyday and in the world of making money online, traffic is gold. For Youtube, advertisement is their business, and it’s also a business for you to join. You have the choice to let YouTube place ads onto your videos and if those ads make money for them, you’ll get a part of it. You see, the process is pretty simple : upload a video, let YouTube place ads on it and wait for people to watch your video which in turn will make you money ! But then again, to actually make good money or any money at all on YouTube, it’s gonna require hard work and a bit deeper understanding of how to make your videos work for you. Making money with YouTube isn’t as simple as filming yourself eating a pie with your phone and gain tons of money, most of the time.
3. Setup your YouTube account and Apply for monetization
3.1. Setup your account
If you’ve already had a Gmail account then you can proceed to login to YouTube and skip this part since YouTube is a part of Google so pretty much it uses the same Google Account, your Gmail account.
If you haven’t then just simple create a Gmail (Google ) account here:
Oh and starting with this post, I’m not gonna provide instruction for filling in sign up form and verify your email as they are all the same. I’ll still give out guidance if something is particularly special.
So, just fill in this form and create your account:
After that, login to YouTube here:
You can sign in from the upper right corner.
Then, click on Channel to create your Channel.
Fill in the info
Now, you’ve got your shiny new channel.
You can proceed to decorate the channel however you like. After that, let’s take a look at the Monetization Option.
3.2. Apply your channel for monetization
Google will do this part better than me though.
Here’s a snapshot of the page. ( it might change over time though )
There’s a part about AdSense that is pretty important for receiving your money but we’ll talk about that later since probably, you won’t be able to make enough money to withdraw from AdSense as of now.
4. How YouTube calculate your income
Here’s the important part. You know, I see many people, teens and adults alike, misunderstood about Video Views and Actual Income. As impossible as it sound, a video with 1000 views can make more money than a video with 1000000 views. It is because YouTube only pays you when the ads on the video generate income, not when the video is viewed that this can happen frequently.
To understand this, first we need to understand how YouTube ads work. There are many different types of ads but the way they work can be divided into Interactive ads and Impression ads. Those are my way of calling them to make it easy for you to understand but you might found their other academic names on your journey of making money online.
Interactive Ads are ads that need the viewers action to earn money. For example, clicking on an ad that pops up on your video or the banner on the right sidebar. This type of ads gives out really high earning per click. Some might reach 1$ a click but then again, not many people click on ads so this even things out.
Impression Ads are ads that only require the viewers to simply view them This type comes in the form of Skip-able and non-Skip-able video ads or banners. Note that banners pay less than videos though. This type of ads will guarantee to make you money but the rate is no where near as good as the former. Expect anywhere between 0.5 – 10$ for 1000 views or so.
So, now you’ve understood how YouTube ads work. It’s pretty easy to see how views and income different from each other while at the same time, related. This question is probably occured in ur mind: What type of ad should I use to maximize my income ?
There’s no fit for all solution here but here are some guidelines you can follow to make sure you choose the right thing !
- Opt for the most non interrupted ads to build up your fan base and subscribers if your channel is still new and trying to gain a presence on YouTube.
- If your channel is aimed at a specific type of viewers with a specific need, Interactive Ads might work best for income sine they are easier to click on the ads that specifically aimed at them.
- If you want to make the best of YouTube, make your channel looks good in advertisers’ eyes so they are more likely to choose your channel for better ads leading to better earning.
4. How YouTube calculate your view
I don’t have much concrete information on this subject since nobody actually do. YouTube doesn’t want anyone to exploit their calculating for hacking. Here’s what I can find:
YouTube video count WILL increment when:
- You watch a video on youtube.com, as long as you don’t reload the video a bazillion times (particularly as it approaches 308 views).
- You watch an embedded video (using YouTube’s own HTML5 or Flash player) on another domain that requires you to hit play.
YouTube will NOT increment video count when:
- You watch an embedded video in a player that has autoplay enabled (video begins playing immediately on page load).
- You watch a video that is loaded through a proprietary player via the YouTube API.
Credit to AtlantaAnalytics, please note that the data was from 2010 so it might not be the most accurate; however,it seems to be how it works even now.
5. Some inspiration
Here comes some real-life stories to show you the power of money making from YouTube, some of them were teens when they started out so nothing is impossible !
PewDiePie ( Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg )
You might have heard about him or maybe you’re already a subscriber of his but here’s some facts:
On 15 August 2013, PewDiePie’s channel became the most subscribed channel on YouTube, being surpassed briefly in November and December 2013 by YouTube’s Spotlight channel. Maintaining the position since 22 December 2013, the channel has reached over 37 million subscribers, as of June 2015. On 19 July 2014, the channel surpassed RihannaVEVO to become the most viewed channel of all time. As of June 2015, the PewDiePie channel has received over 9 billion video views.
Recently, his earning was reported to be $7.4 million in 2014. PewDiePie is pretty much the biggest dude on YouTube right now.
Can you be the next Pew ?
Nah, that’s all I got, there’s plenty online though 😀
